EU COMMISSION: ONLINE DEBATE WITH the CITIZENS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF EUROPE

An online forum to discuss the future of Europe, the integration of different cultures, climate change. To do this, the EU Commission revived the "Debate Europe" website (www.europa.eu/debateeurope), developed as part of Plan D for democracy, discussion and debate, following the failed referenda in France and the Netherlands about the Constitution. The intention was to bring the institutions and the citizens to talk together and revive the building of a united Europe. Now, after signing the Lisbon Treaty, which will replace the Constitution, the EU Executive feels the same need of a "bottom-up democracy". For Debate Europe "phase 2", this afternoon, from 3 pm to 5 pm (CET), the MEPs Margot Wallstrom (deputy president), Stavros Dimas (Environment) and Andris Piebalgs (Energy) will be online to talk with the citizens. "With this forum – explains Wallstrom –, we want to continue the discussion that we started during Plan D". Since its opening in March 2006, "the forum has received thousands of contributions and has been visited 1.3 million times". The discussion will be held in the 23 official languages of the Union.” “
