KENYA: CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS, "OVER 100,000 REFUGEES; FOOD, ACCOMMODATION AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ARE NEEDED"

Over 100,000 refugees have been caused by the political crisis and violence in Kenya: the figure was given today by Caritas internationalis, which, through Caritas Kenya and other local partners, has already set to work to bring humanitarian aids, especially food, water and accommodation, as also requested by the bishops of Kenya, who yesterday called people to peace and dialogue. "Some cities are completely cut off – says Caritas internationalis -, and many thoroughfares have been barricaded". Many refugees, confirms Caritas internationalis, "have been put up in the cathedral and in the churches for safety", while others "are locked up in their homes with little food and water". Caritas highlights that there is an urgent need of "food, medical assistance and advice". For the basic necessities in the most affected areas (Eldoret and Bungoma), the Caritas partners have already provided 30,000 pounds. “We are extremely worried about the consequences of insecurity on the Kenyan population – stated Nik Bretholt of Caritas of England and Wales (Cafod), coordinator for Eastern Africa in Nairobi -, and we fear the situation might get even worse". "We need the local leaders’ good will – he adds – to let such agencies as the Red Cross and the Catholic Church supply humanitarian aids”.
