HOLY SEE: THE RAISING OF THE GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH IN SLOVAKIA TO METROPOLITAN CHURCH

” “As part of the reorganisation of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia, Benedict XVI raised the Eparchy of Prešov for the Catholics of Byzantine rite to Metropolitan See and promoted mgr. Ján Babjak, so far the eparchial bishop of Prešov, to the dignity of metropolitan archbishop. The Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia thus achieved the rank of Metropolitan Church "sui iuris", following a number of provisions. Benedict XVI raised the apostolic exarchate of Košice for the Catholics of Byzantine rite to the rank of Eparchy, making it the suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Prešov, and appointed prime eparchial bishop the current exarch, mgr. Milan Chautur, titular bishop of Cresima. Finally, he erected the eparchy of Bratislava for the Catholics of Byzantine rite, making it also the suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Prešov, and appointed prime bishop of such Eparchy the Reverend Peter Rusnák, parish priest of the Greek Catholic parish of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Bratislava. Metropolitan Churches "sui iuris" are now three: the Ethiopian, the Rhutenian and the Slovakian one.
