EU PARLIAMENT: "THE ROMA ARE EUROPEAN CITIZENS. NO MORE SEGREGATION" (2)

Through today’s resolution, the European parliament condemns all kinds of racism and discrimination to which the Roma as well as other communities regarded as "gypsy" are subject: according to MEPs, "the situation of the Roma is different from the situations of the other minorities, and thus, the adoption of specific measures is justified" on a community level. There are several operational proposals: first of all, they foster the Commission to develop a European framework strategy for the aggregation of the Roma, by encouraging their "social inclusion"; furthermore, it is urgent to oppose "education segregation" which "is going on being tolerated within Member States". Moreover, taking into account the "unacceptable" levels of unemployment, the Commission is asked "to foster Roma integration in the job market by means of financial investments in professional training". Then, the Parliament denounces the "deplorable and unhealthy life conditions" as well as the "clear ghettoization" of the Roma, "regular victims of compulsory expulsions". The formation of shantytowns at the margins of urban tissues should be replaced by the carrying out of programmes "offering Roma positive and successful models of lodging". ” “
