EUROPEAN COUNCIL: TRIPARTITE SUMMIT ON ECONOMIC CRISIS AND ENERGY

The "tripartite social summit" held this morning will be followed by the European Council which will begin in Brussels in the afternoon and will end tomorrow. Organised by the current French Presidency and by the EU Commission, the social summit is attended by the president of the EU Commission, Barroso, Paris’ Prime Minister, Fillon, the delegates of the European Confederation of trade unions and of Business Europe, which represents the companies of the 27 member states. The points on the agenda have economic and social relevance and will then be discussed by the European Council along with the more specifically political ones. Two points will be discussed. Firstly, "the financial crisis and the economic slump": "Europe is experiencing a strong economic slowdown, made even worse by an unprecedented financial crisis – reads the agenda –. This situation takes its toll on the companies and their employees. At such difficult times, the EU is determined to give a common answer, which is essential to strengthen the stability of the financial system as well as supporting the companies", by raising "the funds they need". The second point will be "energy, climate change and their impact on employment".
