"We are waiting for a clear text, well written, in which the Holy Father will say: this text is mine." In this way, Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office, replied to a journalist who noticed "some discrepancies" between the text published by L’Osservatore Romano and that released by other media on Benedict XVI’s speech during the Synod of Bishops. "The Pope’s speech is referring to a subject which has already been discussed many times," said Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Archbishop of San Paulo (Brazil) and President Delegate of the Synod, to the journalists. "Exegesis is pointless if we are not listening to the Word," said the Cardinal. "The Word of God is not merely a written text, it is a Word which is engaging us in a dialogue," he added. For Cardinal Scherer, this is the "meaning" of the Pope’s intervention which "has to be interpreted according to the faith of the Church, i.e. according to the listener who is listening with faith, with an attitude which becomes apprenticeship."
