"I say no to this new cold war, we need cold blood instead". Nicolas Sarkozy speaks at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and explains the problems caused by the Russian invasion of Georgia, which he defines a "disproportionate reaction", but at the same time he points at Georgia’s "provocation". "War broke out on August 8th he states in front of the MEPs and on August 12th the EU obtained a ceasefire and an agreement on the retreat of the troops. How successful is that?" "We might have followed traditions, unwritten rules, and do nothing. Instead he adds the pressing problems that we had to face required action, determination, imagination and new ways". "Just the same thing I tried to do for the financial crisis. The G4 meeting aimed at finding agreement among France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy beforehand. Not against the other countries but for the good of the whole EU. And so it happened; actually "the G4 paved the way" to the European Council of 15th and 16th October, "where we shared the need for a coordinated action to support the banks and protect the savers". And he adds: "In the end this crisis might even be an opportunity for the EU, in the sense of more unity"
