Then, Benedict XVI lingered on the pre-existence and incarnation of Christ, speaking of the "Wisdom that existed before the creation of the world", a concept that "implies the idea that Wisdom, by lowering itself into the human world, may be rejected, with serious repercussions on those who do not listen to it". Just like Wisdom, recalled the Pope, "Christ can be rejected, especially by the rulers of this world, so a paradoxical situation may occur in God’s plans, a situation in which wisdom is turned into a seeming foolishness, which is precisely the cross, which would then turn into the way to salvation, all through mankind". This lowering, explained the Pope, "did not mean that Christ abandoned his divine nature". It means that "Christ renounced imposing His previous divine nature and took on, instead, a condition that He did not have, that is, that of a servant. He turned Himself into a small, humble servant".
