Next October 29th, the General Assembly of the United Nations is meeting to vote the project of the Cuban government to put an end to the economic, financial and trade embargo imposed by the United States in 1959. The United Nations will debate this subject for the seventeenth time, after having already condemned the measure in 1992. In 2007, out of 192 UN member countries, 184 voted in favour of embargo elimination, with 4 votes against and 1 abstention. However, if the decisions taken by the Security Council are binding, the resolution of the Assembly is not. According to local sources, in almost fifty years, the damages suffered by the Cuban population because of the embargo amounted to 226,600 million dollars. The embargo is going on in spite of the disapproval expressed by many countries and authorities in the world, including John Paul II during his visit to Cuba ten years ago. ” “
