The Justice and Peace Commission of the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference expresses its "complacence for the disarmament appeals by the United Nations, and during the World Disarmament Week, it supports "all disarmament initiatives in the world". "We join the invitation by Pope Benedict XVI. This year, he invited the States to reduce arms expenses and to create a particular international fund with the aim of offering financial support to the poorest and the outcast all over the world", wrote Msgr. Anton Stres, president of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference, in a note. In this way, it would be possible to halt constantly growing arms expenses, and to prevent the war industry from becoming the more and more powerful driving force of world economy. At the same time, it is necessary to pledge oneself for disarmament and for higher security of the people, so that the need to arm oneself will be lower and lower". In particular, the Commission makes an appeal to the Slovenian general public and the competent institutions, encouraging them "to support the Slovenian international fund for disarmament; to promote education to peace and non-violence in schools; to pledge themselves to reduce arms expenses on both a national and international level".
