Climate change is "first and foremost an ethical issue". This was stated by the Expert Group, established last January by the Council of EU Bishops Commissions (Comece), which in Brussels in the afternoon submitted its Report for the Bishops, called "A Christian reflection of climate change". According to the work group, composed of ten European members from the political and scientific world, chaired by ex MEP Franz Fischler, "to solve the ecological problem we must reconsider some organisational models of society, our lifestyles and our system of values", but we also need "strong political leadership" and, "more deeply, an ethical reflection and debate" which "might be built around the Christian theology" and the social doctrine of the Church. Hence the pressure on the European Union to take on "that leadership" and be "a powerful voice that speaks for the poor and for the future generations, the classes on which climate change will take the heaviest toll". But the EU "also has a duty to take any possible measure to convince all the players of the need to protect the planet’s climate". (continued)
