CHRISTIANS IN INDIA: A NUN RAPED BEFORE POLICEMEN, OPENED AN INVESTIGATION

A medical examination in the government hospital of Baliguda, Bhubaneswar, confirmed today that a young nun of the Missionaries of Charity (the Congregation founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta) was publicly raped and beaten on August 25th in K. Nuagaon, in the district of Kandhamal, Orissa, in front of a dozen policemen who looked on such atrocious deeds and did nothing. So far no one has been arrested for the crime, as reported by the Indian newspaper "The Hindu", which however speaks of some police investigations being under way. Two days ago, an association of Indian women based in New Delhi, called All-India democratic women’s association (Aidwa), had publicly condemned the "failure" of the Orissa police to arrest the people who had raped the 28-year-old nun, "despite over one months having passed since the incident". During the aggression, a priest, father Thomas Chellan, was injured and sprinkled with kerosene as he tried to defend himself. In her report, the nun said that the two people were attacked by a group of 30/40 Hindu fundamentalists and then one of them raped here in front of everyone. Sister Nirmala, mother superior general of the Missionaries of Charity, who is in now in Bhubaneswar, wishes "the investigation may go on".
