The president of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, speaking in Milan today at the opening of the new premises of Università Bocconi, explained the EU’s policies to face the crisis of the financial markets and to respond to the current economic recession. "The first priority of the EU Commission was to contribute to rescuing the financial institutions in distress he stated in front of the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano and guarantee a perfectly coordinated response from all the European countries". "After some initial hesitations, the world witnessed an unprecedented coordination in response to an unprecedented crisis". He explained that, confronted by the emergency, "one can be helped by the State", but one must respect "the directions that allocate such aids to the support of the environment, to research and development".
