Since, with the passing of time, the direct witnesses of that tragedy are disappearing, "more effort must be done to preserve that memory and hand it down to the new generations". Therefore, such initiatives as "The day of memory and prevention of crimes against humanity" should be encouraged. "Such commitment explained mgr. Bruguès belongs to a wider context that the Holy See follows with interest. I am speaking of the plans of the Council of Europe as part of the European Cultural Convention, noticing in particular that they embody the joint effort of contributing, through education, to the building of a more caring and democratic Europe, respectful of diversity and aware of its own identity".
