Seventy years ago, the Nazi wreaked havoc on German and Austrian streets. "More than 8,000 shops were destroyed, 1,400 synagogues got damaged and burned, many people were killed and thousands were deported, but the world did not react." "If this has happed once, it could happen again." This was denounced yesterday by Cardinal Péter Erdö, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Primate of Hungary, speaking during the commemoration ceremony of the "Crystal Night" which was held yesterday at the Holocaust Memorial in Budapest. The commemoration at which László Mandur, representing the Hungarian Parliament, Chief Rabbi István Domán, and Israeli Ambassador Aliza Bin-Noun had also spoken – marked the official beginning of the 20th meeting of the International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee. "The tragedy of the holocaust," said Cardinal Erdo, shows that "history is functional" and if "people agree that other people are repressed, robbed, discriminated against and killed, this could happen again. This could happen today if we remain indifferent when shop windows are broken with violence, when cars are set on fire and when persecutions against Christians are carried out in different states members of India".
