A special memorial Mass will be celebrated tonight at 6.30 pm in the chapel of the Catholic University of Dublin, in memory of card. John Henry Newman, on the 150th anniversary of the end of his post as head of the Catholic University of Ireland. The co-celebration will be officiated by mgr. Leo O’Reilly, bishop of Kilmore and president of the Education Committee of the Irish Bishops Conference. Formerly the leader of the Oxford movement in the Anglican Church, Newman converted to Catholicism in 1845 and in November 1851 he was appointed by the Irish Bishops head of the Catholic University, a post he held until November 1858. His lectures on university education, which were published for the first time in 1852, are memorable. Card. Newman was declared Venerable on January 22nd 1991.
