The International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee (ILC), gathered in Budapest for its 20th conference, expressed in a joint release that was published last night its "deep regret for some controversies and intemperate statements that have been made on the dispute about the role of Pope Pius XII during the Second World War". Card. Walter Kasper and Rabbi David Rosen, co-presidents of the "International Catholic-Jewish Liaison Committee", stated: “We confirm our commitment to a relationship based on mutual respect and sensitivity. The disagreements that inevitably happen from time to time between us must be expressed in a way that reflects such spirit, not in a language that only compounds tensions”. Cardinal Kasper assured that "the concerns of the Jewish community have been clearly submitted to the highest levels of the Holy See". The release ends by recalling that 10 days ago, the International Jewish Committee for Inter-Religious Consultation (IJCIC) asked Pope Benedict XVI to let the academicians see the archives concerning the "decisions taken by the Holy See about people and policies during the Second World War".
