Focusing on the themes of the meeting of heads of State and Government in preparation for the G20 summit fiscal paradises regulation, curtail of the hedge funds’ activity, modernisation of the International Monetary Fund and of the World Bank , Mgr Van Luyn urged to go deeper into analysis: "It is far more our societal model that is being called into question." According to the president of COMECE, "the deeper causes of the financial crisis lie in a misguided set of values." In other words, "the financial crisis has exposed a spiritual crisis and a distorted hierarchy of values. Money is the compass, yet, now we have arrived at the North Pole, we notice that the needle of the compass is spinning. And it is spinning ever faster." Today "the inner sense and value of human work has been pushed aside to the background in the general struggle for profit" and "people and planet are, in the final analysis, only regarded in a functional way." To the list of three ‘P’s (People-Profit-Planet), Mgr Van Luyn suggested adding a fourth ‘P’, the Greek word ‘pneuma’, which "expresses a relational and spiritual dimension in order to consider the human being in his entirety." Understanding "why people act against their better knowledge and better judgment" and "set themselves the acquisition of wealth as a life goal is a religious issue," he added. (continued)
