Today, UK’s religious leaders, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Indus, Buddhists, Baha’is, Sikhs and Zoroastrians, are visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks are also part of the delegation. "The visit" reads a statement by the Anglican Communion "will demonstrate UK’s faith leaders’ solidarity in standing against the extremes of hostility and genocide which Auschwitz-Birkenau represents and which are represented in Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda in modern times." The visit organised by the project "Holocaust Educational Trust" will also be attended by 200 students accompanied by their teachers. "Auschwitz, as many have said, reduces us to silence," said the Archbishop of Canterbury. "But to say this and no more is to shy away from the challenge it poses. If we are truly committed, we have no choice but to seek to grow in our ability to identify where these [holocausts] are present today." The visit will end in Birkenau, where students will join in a candle lighting ceremony and read reflective readings. "We cannot change the past, but by remembering the past we can change the future," said Rabbi Sack.
