"The world must choose between consumerism and greediness and social responsibility and ethical behaviour, and apply such values to the political and economic spheres as well". It was said by Miguel D’Escoto Brokmann, chairman of the UN General Assembly, during the two-day summit, which ended yesterday at the UN Glass Palace in New York, about "Culture of peace". The UN developed "a complex, detailed programme to turn the world into a better place but progress is too slow". D’Escoto Brokmann mentioned that one of the most pressing problems is the spreading of poverty and malnutritio, and the violence that "deprives millions of people of their right to a dignified life", in spite of the fact the world "does have the technical abilities and financial and technological resources it takes to treat these diseases". Not only is this state of things "shameful, but, to use a religious term, it is a veritable sin", went on the Assembly chairman, who added that "nothing less than heroic decisions and actions can reawaken us from our moral coma". D’Escoto asked the wealthy countries to combine ethics and principles, "that are shared by all the big religions and philosophical traditions, such as love and respect for one’s neighbours", in politics and economy.
