50% of goods recalled from the EU market, because hazardous or harmful for personal health and safety, are made in China. The other 50% of "below-standard" goods are mainly made in the EU or in the United States. A form of cooperation is therefore needed, for the customers’ peace of mind. "Confidence is the currency of the global economy", states MEP Meglena Kuneva. "Every week, a new alert reminds us that we cannot afford to lose sight of safety problems" and must put them "at the top of the EU’s political agenda". In Brussels today, Kuneva, who is in charge of consumers’ safety, opened the first "Trilateral summit on product safety", along with Nancy Nord, president of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Wei Chuanzhong, deputy minister on behalf of the People’s Republic of China. The purpose of the meeting was to "send a strong political message on the determination of all the parties concerned to keep product safety at the centre of the international agenda, recognising that open markets may not be built unless the global product supply chain is strictly managed".
