Only "transformed by Christ’s love for God and for the neighbour, we can be really just before God" because "the Law finds its fulfilment in the commandment of love." With these words Pope Benedict XVI ended today’s general audience catechesis, once again dedicated to St Paul and centred on the doctrine of justification. "When Paul met the risen Christ on the Damascus road explained the Pope he was a satisfied person: steadfast in his attitude towards the justice that flows from the Law," but after this encounter he "started considering all his merits" as "’rubbish’ when compared to the sublime knowledge of Jesus Christ." "From a justice based on the Law and acquired by observing the work prescribed, he turned to a justice based on the faith in Christ." According to Benedict XVI, "the relationship between Paul and the risen Christ became so deep that Paul eventually affirmed that to him life" was "Christ and death was gain for he could be with Christ." For this reason, underlined the Pontiff, "Paul places at the heart of his Gospel an adamant opposition between two alternate paths to justice: one based on the works of law and the other based on the grace of the faith in Christ".
