"Fighting against the abuse of women means promoting peace and human dignity worldwide". Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner announces the position taken by the EU Executive just before November 25th, the World Day for the eradication of violence against women. For the occasion, the EU Commission "highlights its determination to fight all forms of violence against women, as well as protect the victims, in close cooperation with the member states and the civil organisations". "In addition, this means explains the Commissioner protecting women from harmful traditional practices, such as genital mutilation, both within the EU and outside its borders". Ferrero-Waldner advocates the need for "full female emancipation" and invokes equal rights and equal opportunities for men and women. She mentions some very delicate situations across the world regarding the respect of women’s rights and their physical and moral health, such as Eastern Congo. Finally, she insists on asking the UN to promote a ministerial conference in 2010 about the enforcement of resolution 1325 of 2000 on women, peace and security.
