Launching a debate on the role of science in European societies, defining the means for strengthening dialogue between scientists and research partners and defining good political rules. These are the main issues to be tackled at the "Science in Society: Dialogue and Scientific Responsibility" conference organised by the French Ministry of Education to be held in Paris from today (until tomorrow). "European citizens have traditionally had a very positive image of scientists but they have grown increasingly suspicious of certain scientific and technological applications," the organisers explain, "while young people are showing disinterest in science education options, inviting reflection on the role of science in European society." "Have we left behind an age when science was considered an engine of progress? Do we understand the causes? How do we restore confidence? How do we differentiate the responsibilities of scientists?" These are some of the questions at the heart of the conference that will focus on five fields: agronomy, climate and energy, health, fundamental science and information, communication science and technology. The conference will be attended by international scientists and experts of great renown and representatives of the European institutions including Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, and Jacques Dermagne, President of the Economic, Social and environmental Council (CESE).” “
