The eradication of a symbol deeply rooted in the Spanish culture such as the crucifix "does not encourage cohabitation" which is based on "respect." This is what the archbishop of Seville, Cardinal Carlos Amigo, said yesterday, on the margins of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference plenary assembly, answering the questions posed by the journalists who asked his opinion about the sentence imposed by a judge of Valladolid who wanted crucifixes to be removed from the walls of a local state school to meet the request of a Lay School Cultural Association. "What is important is to teach children in Valladolid the respect of any religious symbols of every religion," declared Cardinal Amigo. According to the Cardinal, "drastic measures do not educate people." It would be better to "teach" the respect of religious symbols rather than eradicate them.
