EU ACTION PLAN: BARROSO, "UNPLANNED MEASURES FOR AN UNPRECEDENTED CRISIS"

"There’s no credible euro without a credible Stability Pact". José Manuel Barroso, in Brussels to announce the EU action plan to face the economic crisis "resulting from the financial crisis", recalled that these are unplanned measures, "coordinated" between the EU and the member states, which will have to bear the greatest financial burden of such measures to "give the citizens back their confidence", support the companies and revive consumption. The figures presented by Barroso look higher than the planned ones: they are worth 200 billion euros, i.e. 1.5% of the Gross Domestic Product of the 27 member states. Of these, 170 billion euros will be provided by the states, 30 billion euros will come from the EU budget. The head of the EU Executive speaks of "an unprecedented response to an unprecedented crisis" and asks the participating countries to "enforce the EU plan without delay". In addition, the EU Commission thinks the measures taken by each country should meet the specific requirements of each state and therefore "they might not be the same ones". Commissioner Joaquin Almunia explained that the Stability Pact "is not put aside" but enforced "more flexibly" for the time being.
