"In these cases insisted the Pope the main criterion must always be respect for the life of the donor, and organ removal should be allowed just in the presence of real death". "The act of love expressed through the donation of one’s vital organs said Benedict XVI remains a genuine token of charity, as something capable of looking beyond death, to let life always win". According to the Pope, "the receiver should be well aware of the value of this gesture". The receiver is "given a gift that is beyond therapeutic benefit". This gesture can "augment the culture of the gift and of gratuitousness". Then, there were the papal indications for the future: "The main direction to be followed, until science discovers any new and more advanced forms of therapy, shall be the shaping and diffusion of a solidarity culture open to everybody, and excluding nobody". In other words, for "a transplantation medicine corresponding to the ethic of donation, everyone should pledge to invest any possible resource in training and information, so as to sensitize consciences to a greater and greater extent in relation to these problems, which concern the lives of many people directly". All that, concluded the Pope, in order "to dispel prejudices and misunderstandings, to avoid mistrust and fear", "replacing them with certainties and guarantees".
