"Let’s hold hands for unity": with this slogan, the Catholics of Mumbai mobilise for peace, after the recent terrorist attacks: the association "Bombay Catholic Sabha", which gathers most of the Catholic lay people of the city, organised a "Human chain for peace" which will be built in town on December 12th to symbolise the longing for unity and reconciliation between all the citizens of Mumbai. Launched by the Catholic Church, the idea of a human chain attracted the devotees of other Christian confessions, of other religions (Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Sikhs) and other citizens, who will surround, in a wide embrace, the religious and political places, the main symbols of the city, expressing the wish for and the hope in harmony among all the population. The event has been joined in by over 100 civil organisations, student movements, trade unions, human rights associations, non-governmental organisations and thousands of ordinary citizens. "We, the people of Mumbai, who have seen hatred and bloodshed in our city, promise that we will not surrender to terror or to those who preach war, violence, hatred and intolerance. We pledge ourselves to keep Mumbai a united, peaceful city and to build a world based on the principles of tolerance, peace, equality and justice", states the manifesto that has been published by the organisers.
