In his report to the European Congress of Catholic Schools, mgr. Nichols pointed out that they play "a key role in the mission of the Church", help "parents raise and educate their children", "serve the local Church" and "social welfare". As to the latter point, the president of the Schooling Commission of Ccee explained that Catholic schools "help students develop a religious sensitivity, fundamental principles and ethical values" and teach them "to appreciate those of other people, which are all essential for the cohesion of modern societies". According to the prelate, the Catholic school must face four challenges. Firstly, "putting together a genuine community, starting from the diversity of its members"; then, "teaching how to properly use freedom, which, along with self-expression and self-motivation, are the key factors of the learning process". A further commitment: to spread "the truth of Christ" in "the integrity of knowledge", and, finally, educating to solidarity. The meeting was attended by the bishops of Ccee in charge of the school pastoral and experts from Ceec. A survey on the teaching of religion was presented during the meeting.
