Finding new ways to develop European interculturality through developing the understanding European peoples have of their neighbours (mobility, dialogue and exchanges). This is the purpose of the meeting "Europe: Crossing Cultures" organised tomorrow in Paris by the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union that will bring together European cultural experts (historians, journalists, teachers, etc.). Moderated by Anette Gerlach, a journalist from Arte, a Franco-German television channel, the debates will be based on the results of a study on "cultural references," conducted using the same methods in Germany, Italy and France, and which could be extended to all the EU Member States. The study makes it possible to observe national specificities and to identify supranational cultural references and preconditions for extending knowledge of the culture "of the other". "In these days of the internet," explain the organisers, "we need to rethink the place of ‘our foreign neighbours’ in school textbooks and, more generally, in our education systems and media. We should also think again about the translation of major national texts and take a fresh look at the missions of Cultural Centres abroad and other tools of ‘cultural presence’."
