ALEXIUS II: RUMANIAN ORTHODOX PATRIARCH, "A GREAT FIGURE IN THE CHRISTIAN WORLD"

"A great figure in the contemporary Christian world." With these words Rumanian Orthodox Patriarch Daniel recalls the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexius II in a statement sent to the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. "Alexius II – Patriarch Daniel writes – will be kept in our memory as a witness of the Orthodox faith in the difficult times of Communism and as an unfailing promoter of inter-religious and inter-Christian cooperation and dialogue." Alexius II "reorganised the Russian Orthodox Church at a time of fast political and social changes in Eastern Europe," says the Rumanian Patriarch. "His name – he adds – will be linked forever to the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, which he restored to its ancient magnificence." The Rumanian Patriarch expresses "the deep grief of Christians" from the whole Rumanian Church, and offers his prayer for the eternal rest of Patriarch Alexius. The message of Daniel ends with a prayer "for all Orthodox People and the Moscow Patriarchate," that they "may be comforted and strengthened in their faith." ” ” ” ” ” ” ” “
