A free and fair society cannot recognise, warn the Spanish bishops, "either explicitly or implicitly, a terrorist organisation as a political leader of any group of people, nor can it have it as a political counterpart". In fact, the Church recognises, in principle, "the legitimacy of those nationalist positions that, without using violence, with democratic methods, would like to change the political set-up of the unity of Spain", provided "the common good of a centuries-old society" is protected. The Spanish Bishops Conference points out other emergency situations as well: care and help must be provided to immigrants, unemployed people, lonely people, girls who can fall into the trap of prostitution, women humiliated and threatened by domestic abuse, exploited and abused children, people who have no home nor a family to welcome them. We must also work to solve the most pressing needs, such as "work, affordable homes for everyone, the proper use of nature by sharing the gifts that are so essential to life, such as water, and carefully managing the common heritage of Creation". Finally, on a global scale, we must promote "the right cooperation for an integral development of the countries".
