"An emergency number, really working throughout the European Union, is an essential instrument to grant our citizens’ security". Viviane Reding, in charge of telecommunication, launched a media campaign in the name of the whole college of commissioners, with the aim of letting citizen know the Europe service "112", "number to be dialled to get in touch with emergency services from any place in the European Union". Following a survey made known today, actually, "just 22% of the Union’s citizens are able to identify, by themselves, the unified number which came into force in 2003". Since then, 26 of the 27 member states respected the community regulation, except for Bulgaria. An infraction procedure is actually going on against Bulgaria. "Making known 112 better, as number to be dialled both abroad and inside one’s country explained the Commission is now the following logical step, to make sure it really works. Just informed citizens will actually be able to access the service in case of accident". Today, 11th February (that is, 11/2), "was chosen on purpose". (To be continued)
