TURKEY: HEADSCARF, MGR. PELATRE (ISTANBUL) "FREEDOM, BUT NO POLITICAL EXPLOITATION"

"As a Catholic Church, we prefer not to take position on Turkish political affairs. I think everyone should be free". This is the brief comment given to SIR by mgr. Louis Pelâtre, vicar apostolic of Istanbul, about the amendment voted by the Turkish Parliament to let people attend the state universities wearing a headscarf. "In America – adds the bishop –, women can attend university wearing a headscarf if they want to, in France they cannot, but in the Catholic schools they can. I am in favour of people’s freedom – he concludes –, provided it is not exploited by politics". (dnr)
