ENVIRONMENT: THE EU PRIZE TO FRANKFURT (GERMANY), KOPRIVNICA (CROATIA) AND ARAD (ROMANIA)

Frankfurt (Germany), Koprivnica (Croatia) and Arad (Romania) are the three cities that will receive the European Mobility Week prize in Brussels tonight. The prize is awarded by the Commission to the best measures taken during the special week that took place from 16th to 22nd September 2007, taking inspiration from the slogan "Streets for people", "encouraging the local authorities to give more space to forms of mobility other than motor vehicles" and to create awareness-raising events and practical experiences of sustainable mobility. The Environment Commissioner, Stavros Dimas, who will give the award, explains that the "2016 cities from 35 countries with an estimated population of 215 million joined the 2007 Mobility Week". 42 cities had been nominated for the prize: in addition to the three winners, the expert panel also mentioned the measures taken by other cities: Almeirim (Portugal), Bjelovar (Croatia), Ponferrada (Spain), Budapest (Hungary), Sheffield (United Kingdom), Ostersunds (Sweden) and Kromeriz (Czech Republic).
