HOLY SEE: RESTRUCTURING OF LATIN ECCLESIASTIC DISTRICTS IN SLOVAKIA

The reorganisation of the Church of Slovakia is going on. After seeing to the Greek Catholic Church, by raising on January 30th the Eparchy of Prešov for Catholics of the Byzantine rite to a Metropolitan See, the Holy Father provided for a number of reorganisations in the Latin Ecclesiastic Districts of Slovakia as well. As described in a note relayed today by the Holy See, the Pope established the metropolitan archdiocese of Bratislava, based in Bratislava, thus breaking up the territory of the metropolitan archdiocese of Bratislava-Trnava. This resulted in the establishment of the archdiocese of Trnava, as a suffragan of Bratislava, based in Trnava. In addition, the Pope established the new diocese of Žilina, making it the suffragan of the Metropolitan Church of Bratislava. Then, he provided for the extension of the diocese of Nitra, with 9 deaneries of the previous archdiocese of Bratislava-Trnava. These changes also involved new appointments. Mgr. Stanislav Zvolenský, so far the titular bishop of Novasinna and the auxiliary bishop of Bratislava-Trnava, is the new metropolitan archbishop of Bratislava. Mgr. Ján Sokol, so far the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bratislava-Trnava, has instead been confirmed by the Pope as the archbishop of Trnava. Finally, he appointed bishop of the new diocese of Žilina mgr. TomᚠGalis, so far the titular bishop of Bita and the auxiliary bishop of Banská Bystrica.
