BALKANS: JEREMIC (SERBIA), "ANY ACTION BY PRISTINA IS UNWARRANTED, BUT WE ARE PREPARED TO NEGOTIATE"

Kosovo’s declaration of independence "is a unilateral, illegal and unwarranted act", which "jeopardises the territorial integrity of Serbia" and "destabilises the Balkans". Vuk Jeremic, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belgrade, uses harsh words to describe the situation that has come into being in Pristina: after giving a speech in the morning to the Committee of the Ministers of the Council of Europe, he meets the accredited press in Strasbourg and explains: "We are not going to let anyone threaten the unity of our country and the national sovereignty. We challenge any action by the self-proclaimed authorities of Kosovo. At the same time, we are willing to resume negotiations with the interim authorities of Pristina under the aegis of the United Nations". Jeremic speaks of the "Serbians of Kosovo", meaning the population of the region with an Albanian majority. He explains that he will reprimand the ambassadors of the countries that will acknowledge the government of Pristina: "As we did with the United States and yesterday with France, we will do the same with all the other states. Today, we will deal with Austria, then with Germany and other nations". (continued)
