“We are living this moment with serenity", unlike what people outside Cuba might think. As for any other event, the attitude of the Church is always that of confiding in God’s providence and in the commonsense of those who will take responsibility now”. This is the first off-the-cuff comment given to SIR by mgr. Josè Felix Perez, executive secretary of the Cuban Bishops Conference, the day after president Fidel Castro resigned from his position. Contacted in Havana during the meeting of the Cuban Bishops Conference, while waiting for an official statement from the Bishops, mgr. Perez describes this historical moment with calm and serenity: "We are very calm, we do the same things we do every day and we are waiting for the installation of the new president on Sunday, with the structures and the powers that are typical of the Council of State he comments -. We only have to wait for next week and see what the profile and the targets of the state institutions will be. Right now, it is difficult to understand what means the new president will use and how fast, because there is no doubt that such means will have to be adopted slowly, not hurriedly. But, for the time being, it is to be expected that everything will go on as usual”.
