ECUMENISM: CCEE/KEK MEETING, DE CLERMONT, "A COUNCIL OF EUROPEAN CHURCHES"

"The basic ecumenism – went on the president of Kek –, the one of the joint testimony, the one that expects us to develop a renewed ecumenical spirituality that will fulfil the common commitments of our Churches, needs a powerful, official sign, after which our Churches would show the way, would provide guidance". Hence the proposal to "establish, in the next ten years, a Council of European Churches, bringing together Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant members. It would mean starting out again towards something more than a ‘conciliarism’, a ‘regional conciliarism’, giving a powerful sign of the will of change of the Churches". "I carefully consider the ecclesiological matters and the extent of the work needed to respond to such suggestions – specified Clermont -; but it is not in our power to take decisions, without a complex process of involvement of our Churches. However, I would like to see, at least with you – he said to those present -, if you think that openly facing such challenge would help the cause of the Christian unity". The meeting is attended by seven members of Kek and seven members of Ccee.
