CUBA: THE BISHOPS’ RESPONSE TO THE POPE’S MESSAGE

(Patrizia Caiffa, SIR correspondent from Cuba) – “We are full of admiration and gratitude for the words of the Pope, who is aware of our situation and follows us”: this is the response, as expressed to SIR, of mgr. Juan Garcia Rodriguez, archbishop of Camaguey and president of the Cuban Bishops Conference, after yesterday’s meeting in the Casa sacerdotal of Havana with card. Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State of the Holy See, who read Benedict XVI’s message to the Cuban Bishops and gave his personal address. Just before that, mgr. Garcia had greeted card. Bertone on behalf of all the Bishops, who now describe such meeting as "a very fruitful conversation”, where they liked the Pope’s "affectionate" words about the Cuban Church and population. "They express a great human warmth and confirm us in faith and hope – adds mgr. Juan de Dios Hernandez, secretary general of the Cuban Bishops Conference –. It is very important that the Pope trust us Bishops. There is wonderful continuity in the magisterium, even about the issues that concern us. We keep asking the government to increasingly normalise the life of the Church in all areas “. (segue)
