The Egyptian capital, Cairo, has been chosen to host, today and tomorrow, one of the three events that the Slovenian presidency of the EU Council has planned for the first half of 2008, as part of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. The subject of the first meeting, that will be attended by leaders of the EU and the countries looking out onto the sea, is "information society", with its scientific, economic, social and cultural implications. Other initiatives on the same subject have already been promoted in the past by the European Union, the first one in Dundalk, Ireland, in 2005. The conference will be opened by the Slovenian Minister of Science and Technology, Mojca Kucler Dolinar. The items on the agenda, explains a note from the Presidency, include the relations between the Mediterranean countries in terms of "research in this sphere and possible mechanisms for future cooperation", the legislative framework of electronic communication, connectivity, multilingual contents" on the Internet and the media, the learning of the latest technology.
