PHILIPPINES: FAITHS IN THE SQUARE AGAINST CORRUPTION AND MISGOVERNMENT TOMORROW

The Major Religious Association, the Catholic Educator Association, and the United Muslim Movement for Truth and Solidarity are some of the many groups announcing their participation in the interreligious event scheduled for tomorrow in Manila. Green was chosen as the colour representing the protest of faith against corruption and misgovernment. "Green represents search for honesty, truth and hope, and was approved by everybody – made known Leah Navarro, from the Black and White Movement, one of the promoters -. The most politically lined-up groups will be free to use traditional red and white, but we also expect different colours". The allusion was to the representatives of the middle range, who declared their intention to participate, together with politicians from the opposition. The event, probably a really big one, will focus on the request for dismissal of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The dismissal was not asked during last Tuesday’s meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, which nevertheless pointed out the necessity for real fight against corruption, "the national evil". The event will focus on a prayer meeting from 3 to 6 pm (9-12 in Italy) around the monument dedicated to Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, leader of resistance to Marcos dictatorship, killed in 1981.
