WORK: 150 THOUSAND VICTIMS IN EUROPE EVERY YEAR. BILBAO AGENCY’S PREVENTION CAMPAIGN

The new campaign launched by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work is starting in June. The campaign is meant to prevent accidents and work diseases. Every year, according to the EU agency located in Bilbao, the victims of work are 150 thousand: 142 thousand of them due to pathologies linked with professions, and over 8 thousand for real accidents, which means one dead person every three minutes and a half. So, here is "the urgency for new studying and sensitizing initiatives", which are part of the tasks of the community body established in 1996. In these days, for the first time, the Agency is taking stock of the campaign for the prevention of muscle and skeleton disorders, named "Relieve the Burden!", lasting one year. It ended on 26 February. During the final ceremony, new firms were awarded "for innovative contributions to the prevention of muscle and skeleton orders". The experts of Bilbao explained that "every year, in Europe, these pathologies affect millions of workers, and in particular, those who carry out manual work, nurses, and machinery staff". The new two-year campaign, for the period from 2008 to 2009, will be named "The Healthy Workplace: Good for you – Good for business".” “
