EU: KUNEVA (EU COMMISSION), "DANGEROUS MAGNETS. A TAG ON TOYS TO PROTECT CHILDREN"

The EU too, as some member states have already been doing since the start of the year, is taking measures to protect children from the magnets contained in toys. "The small magnets that are contained in toys are often even smaller than a pencil rubber, but they have become extremely powerful – explains Meglena Kuneva, commissioner for consumers -. Findings are being built up about the damages that arise when small magnets come off the toys and end up in the children’s mouths and are then swallowed up". That is why the EU Executive passed a bill – which will be urgency submitted to the EU Council and EU Parliament – to introduce "a compulsory warning tag" to be affixed onto the children’s products. The initiative will concern all magnetic toys, that is, the toys "containing loose or detachable magnets". Such tag "will be affixed onto the package". According to the EU Commission, "magnets are a new risk: over the last two years, several accidents have been reported across the world where the victims were children". Such tag will be a stopgap measure, then the regulations on toy safety will be completely revised.
