THE MILLENNIUM OBJECTIVES: UN CAMPAIGN, THE EUROPEAN VENUE TO LOBBY GOVERNMENTS OPENING IN ROME TODAY

One of the first steps will be a European campaign about the quality of aids to the poor countries, to make sure such resources reach the recipients and are truly effective. But above all it will be a political job, to lobby the European Governments so that "there will be no more excuses" in the fight against poverty in the world and the achievement of the 8 Millennium Objectives by 2015. This was reported in Rome today at FAO, during the press conference for the presentation of the European venue for the UN Millennium campaign. Another two regional venues are in Africa and Asia. The European Campaign will coordinate all the national ones to join forces and have greater lobbying power with the governments. Italy, the last of the list in aids to development, was chosen because "the European campaign began there in 2003. But nowadays Italy is going through a difficult political time and risks taking even longer to fulfil its commitments. If it took the first step – according to Eveline Herfkens, international executive coordinator of the Campaign –, the other countries would do the same. Data prove that the Millennium Objectives can still be attained. However Europe and Italy should work harder to increase aids for fighting poverty and improve their effectiveness". (continued)” “
