"Providing support to the small- and medium-sized companies to encourage them to be more innovative and upgrade their technological capabilities": Günter Verheugen, commissioner for economic affairs and industry, presents the Enterprise Europe Network, offering connections and services to the SMEs of the European Union (info: www.enterprise-europe-network.ec.europa.eu). Companies looking for a partner in a different country or advice "about how to develop an innovative idea or how to submit an application for a EU loan can rely, from now on", on a "new network of about 500 organisations, including Chambers of Commerce, regional development bodies and university research centres, with over four thousand experts". The Enterprise Europe Network has been developed for the 27 member states, but now includes Switzerland, Turkey, FYROM, Norway, Ireland, Armenia and Israel as well. The Commissioner explains: "Since the SMEs can have trouble keeping up to date with the new EU rules and policies, this network will act as a source of information and advice on any existing opportunities. In addition, it will provide information about potential EU funds".
