TURKEY: MOKRANI (MUSLIM THEOLOGIAN), "RESPECT OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IS FUNDAMENTAL" (2)

Mokrani speaks of the principle of "friendly laicism", in other words "an all-inclusive laicism that provides for religious pluralism for everyone, the possibility to live one’s religious freedom within the limits of security, and not damaging anyone else’s freedom". Then, he recalls that the "Charter of Values" also contains a section (number 26) about clothing, which reads: "In Italy, there are no restrictions on people’s clothing, provided such clothing is freely chosen and will not prejudice their dignity. Any type of clothing that covers the face is not allowed because this prevents the person being recognised and relating to others". And section 25 reads: "Taking inspiration from its own religious and cultural tradition, Italy respects the symbols and signs of all religions. No one can feel offended by signs and symbols of religions others than theirs".
