TURKEY: MOKRANI (MUSLIM THEOLOGIAN), "RESPECT OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IS FUNDAMENTAL"

"Generally speaking, one can say religious freedom must be respected. This means one cannot force anyone, in this case a woman, to wear the headscarf or force her to take it off". This was repeated by Adnane Mokrani, Tunisian, Muslim theologian and lecturer at the Gregorian University in Rome, as he commented the approval by the Turkish Parliament of the revised Constitution to permit use of the Islamic headscarf in universities. Mokrani – member of the Committee that here in Italy drew up "The Charter of the values of citizenship and integration" at the Ministry of the Interior – speaks of the Italian experience in this field. "The Charter of Values says that religious freedom is fundamental and the respect of religious symbols is very important. Therefore no law can ban or impose any type of clothing except for security reasons. In some countries, wearing a headscarf is mandatory, in others it is actually forbidden. These are two extreme forms of a law that reduce religious freedom. Because one can be practising or not practising, but in any case this is always a personal choice".
