SCIENCE: A EU CODE OF CONDUCT TO REGULATE NANOTECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH

A "useful system to respond to the legitimate worries aroused by nanotechnology": Janez Potocnik, commissioner for science and research, presented today the Code of Conduct outlined by the EU Executive after a wide public consultation. The purpose is to regulate nano-science and nanotechnology studies and experiments, "in which Europe is a world pioneer and which can produce positive effects in economic, social and environmental terms". However, states Potocnik, "we lack specific information about the effects of such research on human health and the environment, including related ethical issues and the respect of fundamental rights". Now, such Code will be submitted to the 27 member states for adoption; in addition, some initiatives have been planned in conjunction with some universities, research centres and companies, to advertise it and make the current tests safer. Seven are the basic principles of the Code: meaning ("research works must be understandable for the public at large"), durability (studies must be safe and contribute to a "sustainable development"), precaution, inclusion, excellence, innovation, and responsibility.
