"On behalf of the EU Commission and on my personal behalf, I wish to express my sincere congratulations on your success and the success of your party at yesterday’s general election in the Kingdom of Spain": José Manuel Barroso, president of the Executive of the 27 EU member states, sends his compliments and best wishes to José Luis Zapatero, the outgoing prime minister, who won again the majority of the seats at the Parliament in Madrid. In addition, Barroso expresses the wish to go on with a "strong cooperation" with the Spanish Government in the strengthening of the EU integration process, to consolidate "the results that we have achieved so far together". Then he expresses his sympathy with the Spanish people, "hit by the latest contemptible terrorist attack" just before the vote of last Sunday, which caused the death of the Socialist leader Isaias Carrasco. Zapatero will meet again the heads of state and government of the European Union in the weekend, on the occasion of the EU Council of 13 and 14 March in Brussels.
